How often to clean
- Rimfire and pistol cans get dirty fast. Take them apart and clean them as often as the maker recommends.
- Sealed rifle cans usually don’t need cleaning. Check the manual.
Every range trip
- Make sure it’s tight before every string
- Check alignment with a rod if anything feels off
- Let it cool. Cans get hot enough to burn you and melt a gun case
Avoid
- Harsh chemicals or ultrasonic cleaners unless the maker says it’s OK
- Shooting with a loose can, which can cause a baffle strike
