Suppressor Laws by State

Updated October 29, 2026

Federal registration is no longer enforced, so your state’s law is now the big question.

Banned for civilians

California, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island and Washington, D.C.

Legal to own, no hunting

Connecticut allows ownership but bans hunting with a suppressor.

The gray zone

Some states only allow suppressors that are registered or held “in compliance with federal law.” It’s unclear whether an unregistered can counts. If you live in one of these states, ask your dealer or a firearms attorney, or register voluntarily.

Traveling

Don’t drive through banned states with your can. Safe-passage protection may not cover unregistered items.
